A drainfield, or soil absorption system, is usually a series of pipes and gravel or chambers buried underground that channel the effluent from the septic tank to the soil. The effluent is naturally filtered through the soil. The drainfield absorbs the organic materials, reduces or removes bacteria and viruses, and removes some nutrients.
