Septic Pumping, Dunwoody, GA

video

In Dunwoody, GA, Action Septic Tank Service pumped this septic tank. Check out the attached video to see some of the pumping in action.

The septic tank receives untreated wastewater from your home or business. Inside the septic tank, the heavy solids settle to the bottom forming the sludge layer. The light solids and grease float to the top making up the scum. The wastewater, which forms the middle layer, exits the tank and goes out to the drainfield.

Bacteria work to naturally break down the sludge and scum. The leftover scum and sludge that remains must be pumped out. Without regular pumping, the buildup of the solids becomes too high and moves to the drainfield. This causes drainfield clogging and system failure.

Action Septic Tank Service recommends pumping your septic tank every 2-3 years. Additional best practices include:

  • Schedule annual septic inspections.
  • Add a monthly septic treatment.
  • Keep a drawing of your septic system on file.
  • Maintain detailed records of your septic service.
  • Conserve water.
  • Divert greywater away from your septic system.
  • Check for leaks in and around your home or business.

Septic Repair, Roswell, GA

screenshot-2016-10-17-11-46-07

In Roswell, GA, Action Septic Tank Service repaired a failing septic system. The septic filter was completely clogged and wasn’t allowing the water to flow to the distribution box. This caused the entire septic system to backup.

To repair, Action Septic Tank Service pulled and cleaned the septic filter. This allowed the water to make its way to the distribution box. The attached video shows the system properly flowing.

The distribution box is located between the septic tank and drainfield. It evenly distributes the effluent, or wastewater, to the drainfield.  Prior to this repair, the wastewater was unable to reach the distribution box and so the system became overloaded. Action Septic Tank Service recommends having the distribution box checked during your yearly septic inspection.

Septic filter cleaning is equally important to keep your system running smoothly. Regular maintenance will help to extend the life of your drainfield and avoid slow drains and septic backups in and around your home or business. Try to have your septic filter cleaned every 12-18 months.

Septic Pumping, Milton, GA

In Milton, GA, Action Septic Tank Service pumped a residential septic tank. See the attached video of the septic pumping.

Inside the septic tank, the solid and liquid wastes are separated. The sludge settles to the bottom of the tank, the scum floats to the top and the wastewater makes up the middle layer. Regular septic pumping helps to prevent the solids from entering and clogging the drainfield.

Properly designed septic systems allow for the accumulation of sludge. Without regular pumping, the sludge level increases and the sewage does not have enough time to settle. The solids then begin to exit into the drainfield which causes clogging. Now the clogged drainfield cannot properly absorb the wastewater and the system begins to backup in and around your home or business. You may also notice surfacing effluent in your yard.

Action Septic Tank Service recommends having your septic tank pumped every 2-3 years and scheduling annual septic inspections. Keep detailed records of your septic service. Also, save a copy of your septic drawing, which shows the location of your system.

Septic Lid Repair, Canton, GA

septic-tank-service-canton

In Canton, GA, Action Septic Tank Service replaced a broken septic lid. See the before-and-after photos attached.

Cracked septic lids can weaken and collapse. Septic lids and access ports must be properly installed and secured so that unauthorized access is prohibited and potentially fatal accidents are completely avoided. Exposure to raw and open sewage is dangerous. Sewage carries harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites which may cause serious illness and infection.

Open septic tanks should never be left unattended. Avoid leaning over or stepping into your septic tank. Keep vehicles and heavy machinery from parking and driving over your septic system. It’s also important to have your septic system regularly inspected and serviced.

Septic & Landscape Design, Dunwoody, GA

unnamed

In Dunwoody, Metro Atlanta, GA, Action Septic Tank Service found this irrigation line improperly running over the septic tank. See the attached photo.

When thinking about the location of your septic system, careful landscape planning is highly recommended. Otherwise, accessing your septic tank may cause disruptions and other problems in your yard. Your septic tank and drainfield should be clear of underground irrigation and sprinkler lines, decks, patios, sheds, basketball/tennis courts, swingsets, sandboxes, and driveways.

Action Septic Tank Service can locate your septic system prior to servicing. You may also obtain a copy of an as-built from your local health department. This drawing shows the location of your septic system in comparison to your house and property lines. It’s important to keep this drawing on file.

Action Septic Tank Service recommends installing septic risers. Adding risers makes locating, monitoring and maintaining your tank much easier, and eliminates the need for digging.

Septic Filter Cleaning, Roswell, GA

image1-2

In Roswell, GA, Action Septic Tank Service cleaned this outlet filter. See the before-and-after photos.

The septic filter strains the wastewater from the septic tank. It improves the quality of effluent by catching some of the solids before entering the drainfield. This helps to protect and extend the life of the drainfield.

Septic filter cleaning is important to keep your system functioning properly. Regular maintenance will help to avoid slow drains, septic backups in and around your home or business, and clogs.

Septic filters are cost effective and can be installed into existing septic tanks. Additionally, installing septic risers makes accessing and cleaning the filter easier, more efficient, and eliminates the need for digging. Action Septic Tank Service recommends scheduling your septic filter cleaning every 12-18 months.

Milton, GA Drainfield Repair

image1

In Milton, GA, Action Septic Tank Service repaired a failed drainfield. Upon excavating, we found the water was only being distributed to two out of four drainfield lines. This imbalance caused too much pressure on the lines. They became overly saturated and deteriorated, which forced water to come up onto the ground. The drainfield lines had also been improperly installed and were buried too deep, approximately 6 feet underground. Due to the depth, the water was not given enough opportunity to dry up.

Action Septic Tank Service installed new drainfield lines at a more shallow depth, about 3 feet underground. We also performed a crossover and installed chambers to utilize all of the drainfield lines and get the system properly flowing.

Typically, drainfield lines are approximately 3-4 feet deep. If your entire system is failing, we suggest installing a more shallow drainfield, approximately one foot deep, and adding a pump tank to evenly distribute the water to all lines. Setting your drainfield at a shallower depth also allows the water to be better absorbed and relieves the pipes from the weight of the dirt overtop.

Overloaded Septic System, Johns Creek, GA

image1-2

In Johns Creek, GA, Action Septic Tank Service pumped this 1500-gallon septic tank. The tank became completely overloaded due to tree root intrusion. See the attached photos.

Septic overloading leads to sewage backups and system failure. When sewage backs up, the surfacing effluent is left untreated. This poses a health risk because of possible contamination.

Other causes for septic overloading and system failure are often due to improper use and maintenance, inadequate septic design and incorrect installation. Here are some ways you can help prevent septic system overloading and failure.

  • Conserve water.
  • Avoid installing your irrigation system near your drainfield.
  • Divert greywater away from your septic system.
  • Have your inlet and outlet baffles checked to be certain they’re in good condition.
  • Install a septic filter.
  • Only plant grass over your septic system.
  • Avoid flushing plastics, coffee grinds, kitty litter, baby wipes, sanitary products, grease, pesticides and fertilizers down your drains.
  • Pump your septic tank every 2-3 years.
  • Treat your septic system monthly.
  • Schedule a proper site evaluation before installing your septic system.
  • Consider your water usage when installing your septic system to help prevent hydraulic overloading.
  • Make sure to install a septic tank that is appropriately sized for your home.
  • Install drainfield lines that are leveled.
  • Completely avoid parking or driving heavy equipment and machinery over your septic system.

Roswell, GA Crossover

In Roswell, GA, Action Septic Tank Service performed a crossover to repair a drainfield. The attached video shows the water properly flowing, which is the result of the crossover.

A crossover pipe is solid, often made of PVC or corrugated plastic, and used to connect a field line to the next field line in a series of trenches. For this drainfield repair, part of one field line was destroyed by tree roots. To get the system properly flowing again, we tied the unharmed section of the damaged line into the next good line.

Tree root intrusion causes septic and sewer blockages and backups. Roots seek the moisture, nutrients and oxygen inside pipes. They grow beyond the planting area and into septic and sewer line cracks, sidewalks, foundations and other hardscapes.

Carefully plan your landscapes and keep trees and shrubs as far away from your septic or sewer lines as possible. Try to avoid planting fast-growing trees near your system as well to limit the distance of root growth.

Gravel System Installation, Cumming, GA

image1

In Cumming, GA, Action Septic Tank Service installed a new drainfield using a gravel system. See the attached photos showing some of our actual work.

For this particular system, the customer experienced a septic backup and saw surfacing effluent in his yard. After initially assessing the situation, Action Septic Tank Service planned to repair the drainfield by adding to the chambers already in place to allow for more system capacity. However, when we dug down to tie into the chambers, we noticed they had been improperly installed and were collapsed. The collapsed chambers could no longer hold any water because the space underneath became filled with mud. Hence, the system failed and water came up in the yard.

To fix the problem, we opted to install a drainfield, this time using a gravel system. This would keep the lines placed in a more customized layout, at a shallower depth and in good soil conditions with a better perculation rate.
